Higher Power Play

An Improv Workshop For People In Recovery

I created the Higher Power Play: An Improv Workshop For People In Recovery because I’ve found there’s a strong parallel between the principles of improv I was teaching in my classes and the principles I try to live by as a recovering alcoholic. And I’ve seen how powerful it is when we stop trying to “figure life out” and start actually experiencing it. Both on stage and in real life.

In this one-night, 2.5-hour beginner workshop, I guide you through simple, fun improv games that help you practice the core principles of recovery in a completely different way.

Instead of talking about letting go, trusting a Higher Power, or living one day at a time, we play with those ideas, so you can feel them in your body, not just think about them in your head.

This is not about being funny, clever, or performing. It’s about showing up, being present, and discovering that you’re a lot more свобод and capable than you might think. The goal of this workshop is about being funny; it’s about having fun!

Together, we’ll explore how to:

Let go of control and trust the moment

Move through fear with curiosity instead of resistance

Connect authentically with others

Access creativity, spontaneity, and joy in sobriety

Everything I teach is beginner-friendly, supportive, and designed to meet you exactly where you are. There’s no pressure, no spotlight, and no experience required, just a willingness to participate and see what happens.

If you’re in recovery and you’re looking for a new way to deepen your spiritual connection, build confidence, and have a genuinely good time doing it while laughing a lot, this workshop is for you.

Tom Booker is a former college mascot who began studying improvisation in 1986 at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. He later trained with legendary improv teacher Del Close at ImprovOlympic (iO), where he performed with the renowned house troupe Blue Velveeta.

Tom is a founding member of Chicago’s Annoyance Theatre. While there, he performed in the Off-Broadway production of The Real Live Brady Bunch at the Village Gate Theatre in New York and later at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1991, Tom co-founded Theatre-A-Go-Go! with Laura Hall, the musical director from Whose Line Is It Anyway? He went on to teach improv and sketch writing at The Second City Training Center in Los Angeles. During this time, he also co-wrote and co-directed the feature film Kill the Man with producing partner Jon Kean. The film starred Luke Wilson and premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Tom has appeared in numerous television shows, several films, and nearly one hundred commercials.

From 2001 to 2007, Tom taught improv classes, sketch writing classes, and commercial audition workshops at The Second City Training Center.

In 2007, Tom moved from Los Angeles to Austin and founded The Institution Theater, an improv theater and training center in South Austin. The theater remained open until March 2020, when it was forced to close due to the global pandemic.
