Commercial Audition Workshop
Learn to audition with confidence and actually enjoy the audition process!
This intensive one-day workshop is designed to demystify the commercial audition, making it approachable, and helping you find the fun in it. Whether you’re newer to on-camera work or looking to sharpen skills you haven’t used in a while, this workshop meets you where you are and pushes you further.
Drawing on your existing acting training and experience, you’ll work through a variety of commercial audition formats while discovering how acting and improv techniques can make your auditions not just better, but easier and more enjoyable.
All auditions are recorded on video so you can see your own growth in real time, identify what to work on, and leave with a clear picture of where you shine.
This workshop is taught by Tom Booker, an actor, director, improviser, and founder of Austin’s own Institution Theater. Tom has booked more than 80 commercials for brands like HEB, Nike, AFLAC, Sprint, the NBA, Off!, Pop Secret, and many more, and has worked on set with directors including Michael Bay and Spike Jonze.
As a director himself, Tom has helmed commercials, award-winning theatrical productions, and a feature film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He brings deep roots in improv, having studied since 1986 and taught at The Second City Training Center from 2001 to 2007, and has been teaching this workshop for more than 25 years.
This is rare access to someone who has lived every side of the commercial world, as the actor in the audition room, and as the director on the other side of the camera.
Space is limited. Come ready to work, play, and book more jobs.
– For ages 18 & Older
– This workshop is limited to 8 students
Tom Booker is a former college mascot who began studying improvisation in 1986 at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. He later trained with legendary improv teacher Del Close at ImprovOlympic (iO), where he performed with the renowned house troupe Blue Velveeta.
Tom is a founding member of Chicago’s Annoyance Theatre. While there, he performed in the Off-Broadway production of The Real Live Brady Bunch at the Village Gate Theatre in New York and later at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1991, Tom co-founded Theatre-A-Go-Go! with Laura Hall, the musical director from Whose Line Is It Anyway? He went on to teach improv and sketch writing at The Second City Training Center in Los Angeles. During this time, he also co-wrote and co-directed the feature film Kill the Man with producing partner Jon Kean. The film starred Luke Wilson and premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Tom has appeared in numerous television shows, several films, and nearly one hundred commercials.
From 2001 to 2007, Tom taught improv classes, sketch writing classes, and commercial audition workshops at The Second City Training Center.
In 2007, Tom moved from Los Angeles to Austin and founded The Institution Theater, an improv theater and training center in South Austin. The theater remained open until March 2020, when it was forced to close due to the global pandemic.
